Defensible Space done right in Granville
We thin and clear the fuel in the zones around the structure to the county and Firewise guidelines, take out the ladder fuels and dead material, and open up the spacing without stripping the property bare. The cleared material is chipped or hauled, not left in a pile.
A defensible buffer around the home that meets Yavapai County and Firewise guidance and gives firefighters room to work.

Even inside a platted community, the chaparral at the base of Glassford Hill carries fire, so we thin ladder fuels back to Firewise spacing and chip or haul the slash.
Granville sits right at the foot of Glassford Hill, the old volcanic cone that stands in the middle of Prescott Valley, and is split down the middle by Glassford Hill Road. Being this close to the cone is what shapes the ground here, because the old volcano left basalt and hard rock in the soil that most of the valley floor does not have.
Close to Glassford Hill the soil carries volcanic influence, so under the decomposed granite you can hit basalt cobble and hard shelf that a small machine just skids across. Grades roll gently across the ground here, but the runoff off the hill has to have somewhere to go once the July storms open up. Lot access can be tight where lots sit close together, so getting equipment in and spoil out takes planning.
On a graded lot with neighbors on both sides, a pad set off true grade or a drive that sheds water the wrong way turns into your problem and theirs. Building near the base of the hill, you want a licensed hand who reads the runoff before it reads your foundation.
