Ash Fork sits up on I-40 in the far north of Yavapai County, high-desert grassland country that calls itself the flagstone capital of the world for good reason. The defining ground is layered sandstone and flagstone shelf rock that runs shallow across much of the area, along with high-desert soil and caliche. That shelf rock is what makes a trench or a pad hard: it can be a foot down and unforgiving, and the open grassland grade means drainage has to be graded in, not assumed.
