Down on the valley floor the work is getting compaction and drainage right in the clay, so we build the pad up in lifts and set it high enough that it stays dry when the valley holds water.
Skull Valley opens up west of Prescott along Iron Springs Road, ranching country where the granite hills give way to a broad grassland valley floor. This is rural land in acreage, working ranches and rural homesteads, where owners want room for horses, stock, and a house set well back off the road.
The valley floor carries grassland soil and clay in the lower spots, ringed by granite hills where decomposed granite and rock take over. Clay holds water where you do not want it, the valley drains toward the creek bottoms in a storm, and getting from the paved road back to a homestead often means a long access cut.
