The Dells themselves are some of the most photographed granite in Arizona, giant weathered domes and boulder piles, and building near them means building on their edge. This is the hardest granite in the county. Where the Dells run, you find massive intact boulders, rock outcrops, and shallow shelf under a thin skin of decomposed granite, so a building envelope often means working around rock that is not going to move. Drainage threads between the outcrops in ways you have to read on the ground, and the low spots collect monsoon flow fast.
